No. 1 Cougars Capture 5-2 Win Over No. 15 West Florida

Christian Garay won a three-set match on Sunday to clinch the victory for the Cougars.

COLUMBUS - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team took down its second top-25 opponent of the weekend on Sunday after defeating the 15th-ranked University of West Florida 5-2 in non-conference action at the Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.

CSU (12-1) showed no issues after playing its third match in as many days to collect its sixth consecutive victory.

West Florida (12-4) made the Cougars work to collect the doubles point, as the Argonauts stole one of the three matches. UWF's Salvador Bandeira and Lluis Miro found a 6-3 win over Christian Garay and Felix Steen at second doubles, forcing CSU to win the remaining matches to collect the point.

Columbus State was up for the challenge, though. Alvaro Regalado and Tommaso Schold kept the Cougars alive for the point after taking down 33rd-ranked Tomas Descarrega and Facundo Bermejo 6-2 at first doubles, while Javier Cueto Ramos and Justin Welz were 6-4 winners at third doubles over Pedro Cordeiro and Bernardo Costa.

West Florida continued to hang around in singles play. After top-ranked Regalado took care of 21st-ranked Cabrera 6-3, 6-2 at first singles, UWF grabbed wins in the second and sixth positions to inch closer. At second singles, 41st-ranked Bermejo edged 43rd-ranked Cueto Ramos 7-6, 6-4, while Cordeiro defeated Welz 7-5, 6-2 in the sixth spot.

As Steen was capping off a 7-6, 6-4 win to bring CSU closer to the victory, third and fourth singles were in a deceive third-set. The Cougars eventually won both thrillers, with Garay being the clincher at fourth singles. The Columbus native came from behind to defeat Sebastian Sotelo 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give Columbus State the win.

At fourth singles, 47th-ranked Schold continued his perfect 2022 with a comeback of his own. He defeated Bernardo Costa 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 to move to 11-0.
