AUGUSTA, Ga. - Nine Columbus State University tennis student-athletes earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors on Thursday with
Alvaro Regalado headlining the selections.
Regalado was tabbed as the PBC Male Player of the Year for the second straight season to extend the Cougar's hold on the award. It's the fourth straight year a CSU player has won the award.
The Cougars filled the spots on the first teams for both singles and doubles.
Javier Cueto Ramos and
Tommaso Schold joined Regalado on the six-player All-PBC first team for singles, while CSU had two of the three All-PBC doubles tandems. Cueto Ramos and Regalado and
Pietro Martinetti and Schold played their ways to first-team honors.
Christian Garay also was an All-PBC honoree, earning a spot on the second team for singles.
On the female side,
Valentina Abrile and
Neila Trklja were first-team All-PBC single honorees, while Abrile and
Mariana Ramirez were chosen to the first team for doubles. Ramirez was also a second-team singles selection. Wrapping up the awards were
Agostina Bigotti and Trkla, who landed on the second team for doubles.
Regalado becomes the sixth two-time PBC Male Player of the Year after another outstanding campaign. The senior holds a 15-1 record heading into the postseason, including seven wins against ranked foes. He currently is the top-ranked player in the nation in the ITA rankings and is 81-4 in his career during the spring season. It's his fourth All-PBC honor for his work in singles, including being on the first team in 2019 and 2021.
The 2021 PBC Male Freshman of the Year, Cueto Ramos followed through with a fine sophomore season. The Spaniard went 9-4, playing the majority of his matches at the second position in the lineup. Cueto Ramos has carried a national ranking for most of the season and currently is 41st. It's his second All-PBC honor for singles after being included on the second team in 2021.
Schold also grabs his first All-PBC first team selection in singles play, as the junior continues to play a vital role for the Cougars. Schold is 13-3 on the year, rotating between the second and third spots. He is 4-1 at second singles and has saved some of his best work for the big moments, going 2-1 against ranked opponents. The Italian was a second-team singles pick last year. Schold enters the PBC Tournament ranked 38th in the country.
It's the first time Garay earns his way on the All-PBC team for singles after a phenomenal season. The Columbus native is pacing the team with 17 wins, dropping just one match all year long. He ended the regular season on a 15-match win streak and has continued to be in the national poll, coming in at 63rd in the latest rankings.
The sixth-ranked doubles team in the nation, Cueto Ramos and Regalado are a first team All-PBC doubles team for the second straight season. The duo is 4-3 playing together, including grabbing a key ranked win last Sunday.
The second first team All-PBC duo is
Pietro Martinetti and Schold. The pair is tied for the team-high in wins with eight and earned their second all-conference accolade as a team. Martinetti and Schold are 13th in the nation.
Abrile moves up to the All-PBC first team for singles after a second-team selection a season ago. Abrile has played in three different spots in the lineup for head coach
Evan Isaacs, including holding a 9-1 record in the third position. The Cordoba, Argentina native has just cracked into the national rankings over the past two weeks and is currently 61st.
Picking up her first All-PBC honors, Trklja has held down the top singles spot for Columbus State. The first team all-conference selection is 14-6 so far in 2022, including an 11-2 mark at first singles. She holds a 6-2 record against ranked opponents and has been getting national attention, holding down the ninth spot in the national poll.
Mariana Ramirez has made an impact in her first season at CSU. She went 13-7 during the regular season to earn the spot on the All-PBC second team. She is 8-3 at the second singles spot and ranked 52nd in the country.
Ramirez and Abrile have been a dominant force for the Lady Cougars in doubles and are currently one of the top-12 ranked tandems in the nation. The duo is 15-4 in the spring season, including 9-1 over the last 10 matches. It's the second straight year for Abrile to be on the first team All-PBC for doubles.
Agostina Bigotti and Trklja round out the all-conference selections for Columbus State. Bigotti and Trklka both earn their first doubles honors after being tabbed to the second team for a 14-6 mark at second doubles.
The 2022 Peach Belt Conference Tournament begins on Friday at the Walden Tennis Complex. Both the Cougars and Lady Cougars will have byes into Saturday's semifinal round.
