SUMTER, S.C. – Columbus State Men's Tennis competed at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The Cougars competed in the four-day event, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 28 and wrapping up on Tuesday, Oct. 1. CSU was led by the duo of Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone who took the men's open doubles title.
Peter and Andrea took down fellow team members Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi in the finals. The duo went 5-0 for the tournament after receiving an opening round bye and finished by defeating Hammond and Szombathelyi with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to secure the doubles championship.
Hammond led CSU in singles play with a 3-1 record for the tournament, falling in Monday's quarterfinals match vs Wingate's (N.C.) Florian Walcher. Hammond took the first set 6-3 but slipped in the following sets 6-2 and 7-5, respectively.
Camilo Cano, Thomas Cardona, and Peter advanced to the Round of 16 but all slipped in their respective matches. Cano fell to Luka Brown of Wingate, securing set one 6-3, but falling in set two 6-2 and set three 6-1.
Cardona ended his time with a loss to Walcher, dropping sets of 7-5 and 6-3, respectively. As for Peter, he recorded a loss to North Georgia's Pedro Liborio dropping set one 6-3 and set two 6-2.
