TOCCOA, Ga. – No. 20 Columbus State University men's golf traveled to Toccoa, Ga. for the final installment of the fall season, taking on the McCoy Wright Currahee Collegiate Invitational hosted by Anderson (S.C.).
The Cougars shared first place with USC Beaufort, totaling a team score of 871 (+7) in the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 7,382-yard Currahee Club. Martin Gruendemann highlighted with an individual first-place finish with a total score of two-under while Russell Makepeace earns All-Tournament Team honors for his fifth-place finish.
First Round
Bernard Meyer led the Cougars in the first round of action, recording a two-under 70 with four birdies, finishing the first 18 holes tied for third place. Makepeace followed with a one-under 71 to finish the first round tied for sixth.
Gruendemann opened the tournament with an even-par round of 72, carding four birdies in the process for a 10th-place finish after 18 holes. In his first collegiate tournament, Frederick Chappell opened with a one-over round of 73 for 11th place followed by Bryant Vail's 79 (+7).
Columbus State closed out the first round in first place with a total score of 286 (-2).
Second Round
In the second round, Chappell led the way with a one-under score of 71 which was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the 207-yard, par-3 fourth hole to move up the leaderboard. Gruendemann notched another round of 72 to finish with a 36-hole score of even-par.
Makepeace followed with a 73 (+1) with Meyer recording a 74 (+2). Vail rounded out the Cougars with a 74 (+2), scoring five birdies in the second round. CSU shifted a spot in the standings with a second-round score of 290 (+2).
Third Round
Columbus State moved back up to first and finished tied for first with USC Beaufort after scoring a final round of 297 (+7) to finish seven-over for the tournament. Gruendemann charged up the leaderboard as one of three players who scored final rounds of 70 (-2) to capture the individual championship with a 54-hole total of two-under.
Makepeace slid up the leaderboard as well, finishing tied for fifth with a final round of 73 (+1) to finish one-over for the tournament. Chappell and Meyer both finished tied for 11th, recording final rounds of 76 (+4), finishing four-over. Vail finished with a final round of 79 (+7) to round out the Cougars with a total score of 16-over to tie for 45th place.
