Cougars Conclude Season After Reaching NCAA Quarterfinals for First Time in Match Play Era

The Columbus State University men’s golf team saw its historic run at the 2026 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship come to a close Thursday afternoon, falling 3-2 to Wingate University in the medal match play quarterfinal round at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The Columbus State University men's golf team saw its historic run at the 2026 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship come to a close Thursday afternoon, falling 3-2 to Wingate University in the medal match play quarterfinal round at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Although the Cougars' national championship run came to an end, Columbus State added another proud chapter to the tradition of one of NCAA Division II's most accomplished men's golf programs. The appearance marked the 35th NCAA Championship appearance in program history and the first time Columbus State advanced to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship medal match play quarterfinal round since the format was implemented in 2011.

Columbus State earned its place among the final eight teams in the country after finishing sixth through 54 holes of stroke play, securing a spot in medal match play and continuing a postseason run that reflected the program's consistency, depth and competitive standard.

The Cougars earned two points in the quarterfinal match behind victories from Will Coffman and William Partner, while Wingate claimed the remaining three matches to advance.

Coffman delivered the first point for Columbus State, defeating Lewis Beeden 3 up in Match 1. Coffman carded a 2-under 70 during the round and held off Beeden down the stretch after building a lead on the back nine.

Partner followed with another strong performance in Match 2, defeating Brandon Skidmore 2 up. Partner posted a 5-under 67, highlighted by a 4-under 32 on the back nine, to secure the Cougars' second point of the match.

Wingate responded in the remaining three matches to take the team decision. Bryant Vail battled Mattia D'Errico in Match 3 before falling 1 up. Ian Pienaar also went the distance in Match 4, dropping a 1-up decision to Alfie Storer. Bernard Meyer closed out the lineup in Match 5, falling 1 up to Cole Rouse despite firing a 3-under 69.

The result closed a positive and memorable season for Columbus State under head coach Lee McCoy. The Cougars continued to compete against some of the top programs in Division II, finished second at the Peach Belt Conference Championship and advanced out of the highly competitive NCAA South/Southeast Regional to reach the national championship stage.

Columbus State men's golf has built a tradition defined by postseason success, elite competition and sustained excellence on the national stage. The 2025-26 season added another historic achievement to that legacy, with the Cougars finishing among the final eight teams in NCAA Division II men's golf.
