ALBANY, Ga. – No. 19-ranked Columbus State University men's golf traveled to Albany, Ga. to compete at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Georgia Southwestern.
After being forced to take a break due to last week's cancelation in South Carolina, the Cougars returned to play on Monday and Tuesday at the par 72 Doublegate Country Club.
Columbus State finished in eighth place out of 15 teams with a team total of 861 (+3) at the 7,024-yard course. Newcomer Bryant Vail led the charge for CSU, producing a fourth-place finish individually, finish the tournament eight-under-par.
First Round
Columbus State fired a first round 291 (+3) led by Vail's three-under 69 that saw five birdies. Vail started on the 10th hole and scored an even-par first nine holes, following with a three-under 33 on the second nine.
The trio of Jackson Cavanaugh, Russell Makepeace, and Bernard Meyer all carded opening rounds of 74 (+2) while Martin Gruendemann opened with an 80 (+8). Makepeace finished with a one-under 35 during holes 1-9 and finished holes 10-18 with a 39 (+3).
Second Round
In the second round, Makepeace bounced back with a two-under 70 which saw three birdies and an eagle on the par-five fourth hole. Vail and Gruendemann both finished the second round with scores of even-par.
Vail finished with the second round 72 despite carding five birdies followed by four birdies from Gruendemann. Cavanaugh rounded out the Cougars with a 78 (+6) in the second round on Monday. Unfortunately for Meyer, he sat out due to muscle strain but would go on to return to play on Tuesday.
As a team, the Cougars closed out round two with a 292 (+4) and sat at ninth on the team leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 583 (+7).
Third Round
The Cougars responded well on Tuesday in the final round, carding a team score of 284 (-4) to shift one place up the leaderboard to eighth.
Vail nearly finished his first collegiate tournament with an unblemished scorecard, firing a five-under 67 which included four birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole. He finished the tournament in fourth individually with a 54-hole total of 208 (-8), missing the All-Tournament Team by one stroke.
Both Makepeace and Gruendemann carded final rounds of 72. Makepeace finished the tournament in 29th with a total score of 216 (E) while Gruendemann finished in 61st with a total score of 224 (+8).
Cavanaugh wrapped up with a third round 81 (+9) to finish 17-over for the tournament, landing at 77th. Meyer carded a 73 (+1) in the final round, but did not have a complete score due to only competing in 36 holes.
