MCCORMICK, S.C. – The Columbus State University men's golf team competed at the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Lander (S.C.) on Monday and Tuesday.
The Cougars finished tied for third out of 19 teams alongside USC Aiken after three rounds of play at the par-72 Monticello Golf Club in McCormick, S.C., recording a team score of 10-under.
Russell Makepeace led the way for CSU with a three-round total of 6-under-par to finish seventh individually.
First Round
Columbus State sat at fifth place after the first round, recording a team score of 3-under-par. After an opening 18 holes, Makepeace carded a 67 (-5) to land at third place.
Martin Gruendemann finished the opening round with a 71 (-1) for 20th followed by
Phil Snyman at 30th with a first round score of 72 (E).
Will Coffman finished with a 75 (+3) for 62nd and
Bernard Meyer rounded out the Cougars with a first round of 79 (+7) for 90th.
Second Round
The Cougars would remain at fifth place despite improving from the previous round by one stroke, finishing the second round with a team score of 4-under-par. Makepeace slipped two spots in the individual leaderboard with a 1-under 71, closing out the first 36 holes with a score of 6-under. Meyer made one large incredible jump in the second round, erasing the 7-over score from earlier and carding an impressive 7-under round two to close with a two-round score of even-par.
Gruendemann fell to 40th place after a second round of 74 (+2) and was followed up by Snyman in 50th with a second round of 74 (+2) as well. Coffman improved slightly with a 74 (+2) to finish round two in 68th place individually.
Third Round
In the final round, Columbus State shot 3-under as a team and were led by Gruendemann's 3-under round. Makepeace shot an even-par round on Tuesday to finish 6-under and seventh individually and was followed by a 17-spot jump from Gruendemann's final round 69 (-3) for 22nd place and a 2-under total.
Meyer shifted up five spots to 26th with a third round 71 (-1) for 1-under for the tournament with Snyman closing at 50th with a tournament total of 4-over, carding a 74 (+2) in the final round. Rounding out CSU was Coffman in 58th place, finishing with a total score of 6-over with a final round 73 (+1).
