AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 12-ranked Columbus State University men's golf team opened the Peach Belt Conference Championships with a five-over 293 in the first round.
Columbus State was led by Frederick Chappell who finished the first 18 holes with a one-under 71 for T-4th at the par-72, 7,086-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
Bernard Meyer followed with an even-par round for T-10th with Martin Gruendemann carding a two-over round of 74 for T-19th. Russell Makepeace and Pate Stansell rounded out the Cougars in T-31st and 39th, respectively. Makepeace shot an 18-hole score of 76 followed by Stansell's 78.
The Cougars sit behind Flagler (Fla.) and Georgia Southwestern who are tied for fourth at 292 (+4). North Georgia finished solo third at 291 with USC Aiken in second with a score of 286. USC Beaufort leads day with a nine-under round of 279. Georgia College and Lander (S.C.) are behind the Cougars tied for seventh after an opening 298.
