HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - No. 13-ranked Columbus State University men's golf wrapped up its NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional weekend with a fourth-place finish at Mission Resort + Club's El Campeón course on Saturday.
The Cougars posted an a three-round score of even-par (864) after closing with a three-over 291 on Saturday. With the fourth-place finish, CSU officially punched its ticket to the NCAA National Championship on May 19-23.
Leading the way was
Martin Gruendemann as he delivered a standout performance for CSU, climbing six spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for seventh individually at five-under.
Gruendemann fired an impressive three-under 69 in the final round, highlighted by an unblemished scorecard that included birdies on the holes 1, 14, and 16. His top 10 finish kept the Cougars in contention throughout the weekend, closing out the regional within the top five of the team standings for three-straight rounds.
Pate Stansell,
Bernard Meyer, and
Frederick Chappell each turned in final-round scores of 74 (+2), while
Russell Makepeace rounded out the lineup with a 75 (+3). Stansell and Meyer finished in T33rd with two-over totals for the weekend while Makepeace finished T39th with a three-round score of three-over. Chappell rounded out the Cougars with a T75th finish with a 10-over total.
As a team, CSU finished the tournament tied for second in scoring on par 4s, averaging a score of 4.12. The Cougars played the par 5s well with a total score of 17-under for an average score of 4.72. In addition, CSU finished tied for second in total birdies with 52 as a team.
