AUGUSTA, GA. – Columbus State tennis players
Thomas Cardona and
Nikoline Gullacksen were named the Peach Belt Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, the League announced on Monday afternoon. This marks the second straight week that Columbus State has swept the PBC Player of the Week awards for tennis.
The honor is the sixth player of the week nod for the men's team and fourth of the season for Cardona, while Gullacksen captures the award for the second time this season and third overall for the women.
Cardona and Gullacksen both guided their respective programs to undefeated regular seasons in conference play and undisputed Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championships.
For Cardona, ranked No. 21 in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, the week provided a perfect 3-0 record at No. 1 singles and a 3-0 record at No. 2 doubles with teammate Samer Al Tori. The Medellin, Colombia native picked up a three-set win against the nation's 44th-ranked singles player from Georgia College, while downing Lander's Harry Pugh, the 8th-ranked player, in straight sets on Sunday.
Gullacksen, the 14th-ranked singles player, was also 3-0 in both singles and doubles with partner Monika Temkova. The Helsingor, Denmark native opened the week with a three-set singles win over the 13th-ranked singles player before closing with back-to-back straight set wins.
Columbus State earned the top seed for the Peach Belt Conference Championships for both the men and women, which begin this weekend in Columbus.
