Played 3 seasons as right fielder and pitcher for the Columbus State University Cougars. O’Hearn was named All-American and Co-Player of the Year for NCAA Division II in 1996, batting .377 with 16 home runs. As a closing pitcher for the Cougars, O’Hearn had 13 saves and a 1-2 record with a 1.27 ERA. He has a career total of 137 runs batted in and 27 home runs. O’Hearn passed up his senior season at Columbus State University to play for the Cincinnati Reds after being selected in the 38th round of the Professional Baseball Draft.
