Larry Coates played point guard for Coach Herbert Greene’s men’s basketball team. During his senior season, he earned 3rd team All-American honors, 1st team All-Region team, and was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year. He set the single season assist record while leading the Cougars to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. He also earned 1st team Peach Belt Conference honors during his junior season. Coates led the team to a 45-15 record during his two years. Setting records for best free throw percentage, steals in a game, and assists in a season. Coates, who played professionally in Europe, is considered by many to be one of the finest players to ever wear a Cougar uniform.
