Matt Mathews, a four-year starter and switch-hitting catcher is known as one of the best defensive catchers at Columbus State University of all time. He helped the Cougars to two Peach Belt Conference Championships in 1994 and 1996. Mathews was named to the PBC All-Tournament Team and the All-Regional Team in 1994 and was recognized as an All-Peach Belt Conference First Team catcher and an All-South Atlantic Region honoree in 1997.
Mathews hit 39 home runs in his career along with individual records for the most games played in a career (217), most grand slams in a season (3) and most home runs in a game (3) against Auburn University. He also won the Columbus State University Male Athlete of the Year of 1997 and the CSU baseball coaches award in 1997.
He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1998 and continued his passion for sports by becoming an elementary physical education teacher. Mathews also coached baseball and softball at Harrison High School. He received his masters and specialist degrees in education. He is married to his wife Lisa and has two children, Ryan and Abby.
